AZBJJF Academy and Team Sign Ups
By Danny O’Donnell
The 2019/2020 AZBJJF tournament season starts August 10, 2019 with the No Gi AZ State Championships and the AZ Novice Cup. Last season was the first AZBJJF tournament season utilizing the Smoothcomp tournament software, which created some very useful features for teams and competitors, such as team, academy, and individual season rankings. In order for these rankings to be as accurate as possible, it is important to understand the regulations surrounding the registration process.
Under the Smoothcomp system, all academies must register with the AZBJJF to be accredited. As Jiu Jitsu continues to grow, more and more academies are opening up all across the state. The purpose behind the accreditation process is to ensure that all academies represented in AZBJJF tournaments are under qualified coaches and instructors. This keeps the standard high for all schools and encourages more competitive divisions at all ages and ranks.
After an academy is accredited, it is important to understand how to register as a competitor. Under the AZBJJF guidelines, a team is an affiliation that may or may not have several clubs/academies representing it. An academy is defined as one school/club with students training for one (or more) instructors in one local place. Separate awards will be presented to the top Teams and Academies at the end of each competition season, so it is important to understand the distinction between the two.
Competitors must register under the academy (single location) they currently train at in order for the points and rankings to be awarded correctly. For example, competitors training at Ethos Martial Arts should register under this academy. Points earned by Ethos Martial Arts competitors will count towards the Ethos academy ranking and also the CTA Arizona team ranking. Similarly, Northside BJJ AZ competitors will earn Northside BJJ AZ academy points and Ares AZ BJJ team points. Academies whose competitors fail to follow these guidelines are subject to penalties by the AZBJJF, so as an academy owner it is important to understand these guidelines and pass them down to your students.
