The AZBJJF Spring Coaches Meeting & Phoenix, AZ Based Nonprofit Skate After School
By Danny O’Donnell
The inaugural AZBJJF Spring Coaches Meeting took place on Saturday April 20, 2019 at the Hilton Garden Inn Phoenix Midtown. Topics discussed at the event included the Federation’s mission and vision, coaches’ and competitors’ conduct, the Smoothcomp system, tournament rules and regulations, mindfulness training, and networking. The event was well attended and showed the commitment of the AZ BJJ community to grow the level of competition in the state. In addition to providing the premier Jiu Jitsu tournaments in the state, the AZBJJF is also committed to making a positive impact in the community. All of the funds raised at the Spring Coaches’ Meeting were donated to Skate After School, a Phoenix, AZ based nonprofit “providing crucial after-school programming in the form of skateboard instruction to underserved youth”.
Skate After School was founded nearly 7 years ago and serves approximately 240 students per week across 8 low-income schools in the Valley with a team of qualified volunteers. One of the organization’s cofounders is Bobby Green, an entrepreneur and a GD Jiu Jitsu brown belt. Bobby and his team utilize monetary donations, gear donations, and sponsorships in order to help support the organization’s mission. Skate After School volunteers aim to teach kids a new skill and to give them a positive outlet outside of school hours.
