How Do You Keep Up With BJJ Trends?

By Derrick Kersey

If you find yourself struggling to keep up with the ever-evolving game of Jiu Jitsu, do not feel bad, you’re not the only one. This is a common thought for students and instructors alike and to be frank, there is no simple solution. Yes, it is tough to keep up with the evolution of the game. There are specialists within every aspect of the sport, each doing their best to refine and improve the skill set they have. As a student, it is impossible to keep up with the evolution of every skill set in development. So how should you dedicate your time and energy?

It may not be feasible to become a master of every position, system or set of concepts as they emerge, but the huge advantage that students have today, is they can review nuances as they emerge via the internet. Students can observe the masters of any particular skill set evolve and develop their game as they develop theirs. Students can now seek out any trend for additional insight, and visually study it performed at the highest level of competition, resulting in a better understanding and successful execution.

There are many different ways students can keep up to date with trends. For starters, the very best athlete within any given trend can be sought out online. It is likely they will have an online instructional course, providing daily or monthly videos on exactly what they do and how they do it. Students from anywhere can subscribe to a number of different Jiu Jitsu websites offering technique breakdowns, industry news articles and live streams of world class competitions.

Through the use of online tools such as social media sites and YouTube, students can also now research and explore various aspects of any trend within the sport for free. It’s easy to follow a favorite competitor or instructor and if lucky engage with them directly to receive further tips and advice. Alternatively, fortunate students living where Jiu Jitsu is at the forefront of its evolution can even seek out the leaders in the sport and join their academy to learn from them directly.

No matter the education methodology, one thing can be said for certain in regards to keeping up with the trends, and that is the ability to adapt your game is crucial. A great example of this is evident with the explosion of the foot lock game. The field tests are underway and with their recent repeatable success on some of the largest platforms, it is clear that foot locks are on point as the next big trend in Jiu Jitsu, at the time of this writing. If students do not incorporate an understanding of this trend into their arsenal now, it is quite possible that tapping out to a foot lock is in their near future.

In the same way that the ability to adapt is crucial to advancement, so is the ability to put in effort. There are many ways to find the INFORMATION needed to keep up with trends in Jiu Jitsu, but what is more valuable than the information itself is the EFFORT put into learning and adapting. It is up to the student and coach to study the trends, to repeat the techniques with a partner, to honestly assess their abilities and style of Jiu Jitsu and look at where improvement is warranted. Test out the emerging trends that you or your coach believe will compliment your current style, then practice and repeat them.

In the end, there is no easy answer to keeping up with the trends, especially when it comes to combat sports. There are no secrets; in order to keep up, you will need the ability to assess, adapt and dedicate sufficient effort for successful implementation.
