2019 AZ International Open Results

The 2019 AZ International Open went down on Saturday February 23rd and Sunday February 24th at Phoenix College. In addition to competitors registered from all the main academies in the state, there were also competitors representing 21 different countries, 74 different academies, and 42 different teams.  The diversity of the teams and the individual competitors shows the continued growth of the AZBJJF tournament organization. Some of the standout competitors included Sarah Black, Josh Rodriguez, and Efrain Velazquez, who all won gold in their respective black belt divisions. Double gold medalists in the colored belt divisions included Cade Roque (adult blue belt, Maracaba BJJ), Sharaud Ramey (master 1 blue belt, AZ Combat Sports), Clifford Starks (master 2 blue belt, AZ Combat Sports), Urban Kiernan (master 4 blue belt, Maracaba BJJ), Gabriel De Oliveira (adult purple belt, Lotus Club), Ryan Lipscomb (master 2 purple belt, Maracaba BJJ), Jake Watson (adult brown belt, Maracaba BJJ), John Pfeiffer (master 2 brown belt, Maracaba BJJ), Alex Martinez (master 4 brown belt, Ares/Nava BJJ), Jessie McCurry (female adult blue belt, Cannon BJJ), Meghan Gerson (master 2 blue belt, Carlos Farias BJJ), Mei-Lein Preston (female adult purple belt, Gracie Barra Phoenix) and Jameea Gunn (juvenile girls blue belt, Lotus Club) .

The top academy (single physical location) and team for the year is currently Maracaba BJJ. GD Jiu Jitsu Academy, Gracie Barra and Lotus Club are also among the top teams, with only a few tournaments left in the 2018/2019 season.
