2018 Novice and No-Gi State Championship Results

By Danny O'Donnell

The 2018 Novice and No-Gi State Championships went down on Saturday, August 11, 2018 and marked many firsts for the AZBJJF. These were the first white belt only and no gi tournaments put on by the AZBJJF and also the debut of the Smoothcomp system. The system aided competitors in tracking their matches in real time and also viewing results. Rankings for the tournament are tracked both by academy (one physical location) and by team/affiliation.

The day kicked off with the Novice Cup. From the start of the tournament it was a battle between GD Jiu Jitsu Association and Maracaba BJJ. GD Jiu Jitsu Association finished the Novice Cup with 9 gold medals, 9 silver and 9 bronze. Maracaba BJJ finished with 6 golds, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. Gracie Barra Arizona came in 3rd in the team rankings with 5 gold medals, 3 silver and 5 bronzes. For more information on both the team and academy rankings for the 2018 Novice Cup visit https://azbjjf.smoothcomp.com/en/event/847/toplist.

After the Novice Cup came the inaugural AZ No-Gi State Championships. No-gi Jiu Jitsu is generally more dynamic than gi Jiu Jitsu with the lack of grips and friction that the gi provides. The high-level competitors from Arizona brought their A games with plenty of sweeps, passes and submissions. Just like the Novice Cup, the No-Gi State Championship team title was contested between Maracaba BJJ and GD Jiu Jitsu Association. This time it was Maracaba BJJ who pulled off the top spot with 20 gold medals, 7 silver and 6 bronze. GD Jiu Jitsu Association racked up 15 golds, 6 silver and 8 bronze medals. Gracie Barra Arizona again finished 3rd with 6 golds, 7 silver and 6 bronze. The MMA Lab finished 3rd as an academy with 4 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze.
